Winter
Season is so quiet and peaceful in the mountains. It’s
the perfect opportunity to renew your spirit and truly
get “one” with nature. Enjoy cozy fireplaces,
roast a few marshmallows, and read a good book. Doesn’t
that sound perfect! Well, that’s what winters are
all about in Clay County, North Carolina.
Although the summer months are our busiest months,
there are many other local events to enrich the heart
during the cool refreshing winter months. The Licklog
Players have plays throughout the year, and our annual
Christmas Parade is on the first Saturday of December.
Starting at 6:00pm the lighted floats pass by and the
faces of all ages light up with joy for the holiday
season. The prime location to watch the parade is in
the beautiful town square, where you can enjoy the
town Christmas Tree and all the festivities, and then
when Hayesville High School Band starts to play, and
Santa starts waving you will have been blessed with
this old time tradition in small town USA.
After the Parade drive through Jarrett Rd to see the
beautiful luminaries. This one special evening the
homes along Jarrett Rd. light up their properties in
celebration of the special season. Other holiday celebrations
include the Fireside Sale at JC Campbell Folk School
along with many Church Celebrations throughout the
community.
For New Years you can only experience “the Possom
Drop” in Brasstown. This is a favorite tradition
for family entertainment in Clay County. Starting the
evening off you will enjoy the beauty pageant with
some “real beauties”. Some may be a little
hairy with extra broad shoulders but all and all they
are “beauties” in their own minds. Then
everyone enjoys some good ole mountain music while
enjoying funnel cakes, hot dogs, coffee or cocoa waiting
for New Years! While others lower the ball, in Clay
County we lower the “possum”. In the
beginning a real possum was lowered then released
unharmed, but
now a stuffed critter is lowered so everyone is happy
go lucky.
After the New Year begins you can sit back, relax
and anticipate the upcoming beautiful spring in Clay
County, North Carolina.
